Bagolac Saigon

In my quest for the best Phở Saté in Calgary and, upon recommendation by a Calgaryfoodies.com reader and good friend of mine Dustin, we tried out Bagolac Saigon (map) Sunday night after an early movie with friends.  (I have been to this restaurant before with a business associate and ordered a vermicelli dish).

Let me first say this restaurant is huge, so huge in fact that we, who were seated behind the frosted glass partition, missed our friends being seated directly in the back of the restaurant.  After waiting for about ten minutes, a text message arrived informing us that they has indeed been seated and we promptly moved and joined them in the more open back part of the restaurant.

There were four of us dining and we all ordered different meals, so we got to see a little more of what Bagolac had to offer. Nolan had a chicken dish in a crispy noodle bowl, our friends ordered regular beef noodle soup, fried bananas, a mango shake and coconut juice and of course I ordered the Phở Saté.

As stated in a previous Vietnamese restaurant review, I am partial to the clear broth-ed Phở Saté, and this one was of the peanuty creamy variety. That being said, it was had a lot less peanut taste and didn’t have the oily top layer that some similar broths have. It had a good spicy tangy taste and fairly medium heat.  I have to say that for the creamy variety, this is one of my favorites yet. A little more spice would have been welcomed, but none the less it was delicious.  The one thing I wish I had tried was the fried bananas. Janelle seemed to enjoy them, but since they were fried I opted not to try them. Next time I don’t think I will be able to resist.

A definite must try if you are in the area, our meal was delicious, but I will continue on my quest of the perfect Phở Saté.  Sorry no receipt this time, I was treated! :)

Happy Eating.

you must be talking about Thi Thi for subs?

I'm glad you made it out. I personally enjoy the rice vermicelli with spring rolls and charbroiled pork– I believe it's number 80. :D

So far, my fav clear broth Pho is Saigon Pearl in Harvest Hills. A close second is Bolsa on Macleod Trail S. The even if you did not love the food at Bolsa, the amazing owners would have you coming back regularly. I wish I could find something good in Marda Loop; moved here this summer, and the Pho tastes like dishwater.

Hi Les,
Thanks for your comment and recommendation. I will have to check it out sometime. My fav Vietnamese sub place is in Chinatown, and if you didn't know where it was you wouldn't know it was there. A hidden little gem!

Have a great weekend!

Hi Jen,

When you get a chance for good Pho try Pho Pasteur Saigon Restaurant @ 207 1 Street Southeast. It's downtown in China Town. The restaurant isn't much to look at but the food is amazing. It does have the clear broth and has a nice saltiness & sweetness to it. You can add as much heat to it as you want. It's a pain in the but to get to it but well worth it.

Cheers, Les
