Wow, it has been a long year. We totally thought we had written on both Model Milk and National, but when we went through our archives, it turned out we had written drafts, but had never actually hit the publish button. So instead of posting them individually we thought we would do one of our famous head to head posts. We will call this one the battle of what’s new on 17th. Petite would have made this battle, but unfortunately in a waive of unlucky circumstances, including losing the man behind the food to a educational pursuits, they have now closed. We hear there may be a reconcept in the future, but unfortunately what was great at old petite got lost in the bigger better badder petite that was never meant to be.
So lets get on to the battle.
Model Milk is one of the coolest and loudest (literally) rooms in the city. Finding itself in the middle of what used to be the republic nightclub, it is a hard walled, high ceiling location that has an echo like no other, and the owners wouldn’t have it any other way. Loud, vibrant, and busy go hand in hand (maybe not in the case of petite).
The menu is the creation of Justin Leboe, and has no apparent theme whatsoever. You can get walleye, oysters, grits, mac & cheese, chicken and waffles. Anything goes depending on the season and Justin’s mood, and everything is good. Model Milk has a set menu Sunday much like petite’s, and since it is only a few doors away, it is our new favorite Sunday night spot.
National Beer Hall
The National is another Justin Leboe Menu. Oysters rule the world here as well with a purpose built oyster bar. They also specialize in rotisserie chicken and prime rib. Forget what is for dinner though and check this out –
Below is their “National Standards,” which are important because National has something no other bar in the city has. They have 108 beers, most of which are on tap! So take the menu below, and endless beer, and think football, cause I think we just found our new spot.

National also has the future ability to do a beer exchange, which we hope they do. If you don’t know what a beer exchange is, then you just haven’t lived! A beer exchange is where beer is priced based on demand, think stock market in a bar. If lots of people are drinking a beer it goes up in price, if no one is drinking another beer it goes down in price, creating an incentive to try new beers and keeps the taps flowing. The best part is when the market crashes and all the beer goes to minimum price. It is ridiculous fun.
So who wins? National or Model Milk.
We love em both
