Nolan’s 27th Birthday was this past Monday March 8th. I had secretly planned him a surprise birthday party at Crush with his friends and family. Well not so much of a surprise because he is snoopy and was suspect of what was going on that evening and although wasn’t 100% sure of the plan, seemed to have figured out the gist of the evening before we arrived a the restaurant. At any rate, surprise or not, we visited 2 excellent restaurants that evening.
Since the party didn’t start until 7pm, we went to Vin Room for an appetizer and a glass of wine. The sommelier at the Glencoe club the evening before had recommended the Vin Room and their Lobster Nachos, so that is precisely what we ordered. The Vin Room features the Enomatic wine machines so we both ordered a glass of wine. I had the 2007 Feudi di San Gregorio Ognisole Primitivo di Manduria (Zin Italian Style, $9.50 for a 6 oz glass) and Nolan had the 2007 Laughing Stock Winery Blind Trust Red Merlot~Cabernet ($18.50 for a 6 oz glass). Both wines were EXCELLENT and would be something we would like to add to our collection. Lobster Nachos….need I say more?? They were unreal, with a mascarpone cheese, pickled red pepper, green onion and fresh tomato.
After a very poor attempt at me trying to stall for time, and a trip to Bin 905 and an espresso later we headed to Crush Restaurant and Lounge for the “surprise” party. Although the cat was half out of the bag on the surprise, the party was excellent and a good time was had by all. The food and drink at Crush was also excellent. I have been there before for a large function and dinner and they are always exceptional and this time was no different. Our guests ordered everything from Calamari, Chili Chicken Pizza, to Cobb Salad and the famous Crush Grill Burger and Noland and I had the #19 hanoi noodle bowl and Ahi Tuna and Edamame. Every time I have been to Crush I have had the Ahi and Edamame. It is seared on the outside with black and white sesame seeds and served with a five spice soy sauce. The #19 hanoi noodle bowl was a big hit with Nolan and at least 3 other of our guests. It had steak on top that was well seasoned and extremely flavourful and was chalk full of shrimp, and veggies.
All in all both venues were awesome. Very happy with everything and looking forward to checking out the Vin Room and Crush again.
