The Big Cheese is Calgary’s newest restaurant. They opened their doors on Sunday and have been packed ever since. They ran out of fries in their first night, even though they told no one that they were going to open that day. Word of mouth is spreading fast!
The Big Cheese’s menu is simply awesome, the only options are poutine. You won’t be getting a salad anytime soon in this place. About the closest thing you will find is gluten free vegetarian gravy.
Aside from the traditional poutin e, most of the concoctions contain meat, and lots of it! We had the Notorious P.I.G. and the Hogzilla, as well as a traditional and a custom poutine. Both of the pork poutines had double smoked bacon, italian sausage, and pulled pork, the difference was the Hogzilla had peppercorn gravy. Both were amazing.
What stood out for us was not the quality of the fries, or the squeakiness of the cheese curds (they could be squeakier), but the amazing flavors in the gravy. Forget on a poutine, the Big Cheese’s gravy is simply the best gravy I have ever tasted, I wish I had the words to do it justice.
You have to head down there and give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. If you want to make an adventure of it, do a same day tasting of The Big Cheese and La Belle Patate in Canmore, and let us know which is your favorite.
